Healthcare organisations

Healthcare organisations play a crucial role in applying scientific knowledge in practice. Both frontline professionals and healthcare management must be involved and feel a sense of responsibility for the implementation process. But how do you know where to start?

There are 400 healthcare organisations specialising in home care and nursing home care alone. Of the more than 250,000 professionals working in care homes, around 167,000 care for people with dementia. Of this group, three-quarters have been trained at senior secondary vocational level (mostly levels 1, 2 or 3). Around 2.5 per cent are qualified as higher vocational education (HBO) nurses. Nursing homes also employ (para)medical practitioners, trainees and other care staff.

In total, there are around 30 different types of care professionals involved in dementia care in the Netherlands. As well as in home care and nursing homes, they work at GPs’ practices and health centres, (university) hospitals, Alzheimer’s centres and other specialist medical centres, in mental health care and social work.
