National Education Day 2026

November 24, 2026 | 15:00 – 15:30 | Congrescentrum De Werelt | Westhofflaan 2 Lunteren

During the National Education Day (‘Landelijke Onderwijsdag’), DEMPACT is organising a session, in collaboration with Dr Canan Ziylan from the Dementia Practitioners’ Platform, entitled: Dementia education: are we making the most of what we already know?

Virtually every student in the care and welfare sector (at both vocational and higher professional education levels) will eventually encounter people with dementia – from care workers to nurses, and from social workers to doctors’ assistants. But what do they actually learn about dementia? And does that align with what is required of them in the real world? That is what this session is about.

Do you conduct research whose findings are relevant to healthcare vocatotional education? If so, this session will certainly be informative for you.

How does research knowledge find its way into the classroom?

In this session, Dr Canan Ziylan (Dementia PractoraatsPlatform & Albeda Zorgcollege Rotterdam) will share the experiences of students and lecturers from the ongoing practice-oriented research into dementia in the community. Using a series of statements as a starting point, she will engage in discussion with participants. How does research knowledge find its way into the classroom, and are we actually making the most of what’s already available? Ziylan and DEMPACT are also very keen to hear input from teachers: what do they need for their lessons, and what needs do they see among students?

Teachers will gain knowledge and materials from this session that they can use directly in their lessons; for you as a researcher, these are excellent examples from which to learn. After the session, you will also know how to access national networks where schools can connect with one another (and with you!) on this topic – including the Dementia Practitioners’ Platform.

Education that students will need in the future

The National Education Day is organised by the Consortium for Vocational Education Foundation. This foundation works in partnership with schools, training providers and the professional sector. Through teaching materials, exams, digital support and subject-specific expertise, the foundation helps to develop education that meets the future needs of students.
